In our continuing series of examining Google Search Trends to gain insights into the top keywords queried in the USA, we present our findings for April 2024.

Every day, we collect the top three keyword phrases regarding search volume as reported by Google Trends (US Only). Each term has an estimated query volume attached to it, which we also record. The reported totals peak at 10,000,000+ with a lower limit of 100,000+. After the conclusion of the month, we looked at the phrases we collected along with their volumes to understand what drove queries for the month.

April 2024 Shower of Searches

In April, we saw the return of multiple phrases that were queried over ten million times in a day. It has been a while since we have seen more than one month. There were a couple of music releases that were search-worthy.  April is for basketball, with the NCAA wrapping up its season and the NBA starting its playoffs. Beyond B-Ball, we saw search interest spikes around the topics of the NFL Draft, The Masters, and a boxing match that caused a glitch with Google’s’ Daily Search reporting interface. This report has data on holidays, extreme weather events, and Iran’s involvement in the Israel–Hamas conflict.

The Ten Million Plus Collection

Some topics sometimes captivate a large audience’s search (and maybe multiple times). When this happens, we see phrases reported as being queried over 10 million times a day. Here are the three phrases from April 2024.

  • Total eclipse 2024 – 4/7/2024 – 10,000,000+ queries
  • What time is the eclipse – 4/7/2024 – 10,000,000+ queries
  • O.J. Simpson – 4/11/2024 – 10,000,000+ queries

The total solar eclipse seen throughout the USA had people querying to learn more through two different phrases. People needed to know what time the eclipse was going to happen. Unrelated but notable, the passing of OJ Simpson fueled a wave of searches for more information.

What a Month For Music

Looking back at our collection of keywords, we found many related to the music industry.

  • Morgan Wallen – 4/8/2024 – 1,000,000+ queries
  • Billy Joel – 4/14/2024 – 200,000+ queries
  • Tortured Poets Department – 4/18/2024 – 500,000+ queries
  • Taylor Swift – 4/18/2024 – 500,000+ queries
  • Kendrick Lamar – 4/30/2024 – 500,000+ queries

On April 7, Morgan Wallen was arrested in Nashville for allegedly throwing a chair in a bar. On the 14th, a televised concert special called “The 100th: Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden” aired.  Sadly, the TV network cut off the concert in the middle of his song “Piano Man.”

Taylor Swift released her album entitled The Tortured Poets Department on April 19th, which drove people to search for her name and the album.

Because of the cultural impact of her new album release, we saw brands incorporate elements of the album into their marketing. One example was Maruchan using a modified song title in one of their Instagram posts

Lastly, Kendrick Lamar released a song called “Euphoria,” an apparent diss track about the artist Drake.

Some April Holidays

We had a couple of holidays in April. One was supported by social media, the other by a Google Doodle.

  • National Siblings Day – 4/10/2024 – 100,000+ queries
  • Climate Change Progress – 4/21/2024 – 5,000,000+ queries
  • Earth Day – 4/22/2024 – 200,000+ queries

National Siblings Day got some attention on the 10th when people posted photos of their siblings on social media. Google updated its logo and drove people to a search result page for the phrase “climate change progress” in coordination with Earth Day, which occurred on the 22nd.

Iran

In April, the country of Iran was linked to the ongoing Israel–Hamas conflict. The country name was a top queried phrase three times.

  • Iran – 4/12/2024 – 2,000,000+ queries
  • Iran – 4/12/2024 – 500,000+ queries
  • Iran – 4/18/2024 – 500,000+ queries

On the 12th, news broke that there was an expected Iranian attack on Israel.  We saw the country name appear twice in Google Trends’ Daily Top 3. On the 18th, there was news on Israel’s counterattack.

Politician Names

In other political topics, these two names of politicians appeared in our keyword compilation.

  • Lauren Boebert – 4/3/2024 – 200,000+ queries
  • Kristi Noem – 4/26/2024 – 200,000+ queries

Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert had surgery to remove a blood clot caused by the rare condition of May-Thurner syndrome. The governor of South Dakota made news because she reportedly shot her dog. After all, it was untrainable.

Tornadoes and Earthquakes

With the changing of the seasons, tornadoes made our list a few times

  • Tornado watch – 4/1/2024 – 200,000+ queries
  • Nebraska tornado – 4/26/2024 – 200,000+ queries

The tornado in Nebraska was particularly destructive, causing an entire building to be destroyed

On the 5th, there was an earthquake in the NYC area.

  • Earthquake – 4/5/2024 – 5,000,000+ queries

Thankfully, it was not as damaging as the tornadoes.

Assorted Other Topics

Here is a list of noteworthy keywords that didn’t fit nicely into categories.

  • 2025 4Runner – 4/9/2024 – 200,000+ queries
  • IRS – 4/15/2024 – 200,000+ queries
  • TikTok ban – 4/23/2024 – 200,000+ queries
  • Pico – 4/24/2024 – 200,000+ queries

People were excited about next year’s Toyota 4Runner as it is a complete SUV redesign.  Tax Day in the USA was on the 15th. Maybe we should have included this keyword in the HolidayW section. No matter – people were probably looking for the IRS site to get answers to their tax questions.  A potential ban of TikTok continued to be newsworthy as legislation was passed on the 23rd.  Finally, Pico made our list, and we are unsure if it was driven by a New York Times puzzle or a conference. Let us know, won’t you?

  • Knicks – 4/28/2024 – 200,000+ queries

From the Play-In Tournament to the start of the Playoffs first round, these team names were the most popular amongst NBA searchers. We predict we will see long lists of NBA team names through June.

The Masters

The first major golf tournament of the year is held during the first week of April, and there was search interest in 2024.

There Is No Offseason

The NFL is on people’s minds even if no games are played.

In April, hope springs eternal with the draft. A few players’ names were queried: Stefon Diggs was traded from the Buffalo Bills to the Houston Texans. People were probably wondering what Kirk Cousins was thinking when his team, the Atlanta Falcons, drafted a quarterback. The number one overall pick was Caleb Williams, who will begin his professional career with the Chicago Bears.

The Fight That Broke Google Trends

Boxers Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney sparred on April 20th, 2024, and something interesting happened the day before the fight.

  • Ryan Garcia vs Devin Haney – 4/19/2024 – 1,000,000+ queries
  • Ryan Garcia vs Devin Haney – 4/19/2024 – 1,000,000+ queries

No, that’s not a typo. The same phrases were reported twice on the 19th, with the same number of queries attached. The anticipation of the bout was strong enough to double Google’s Daily Trends report.
